In precision instrumentation, the reliability of a pressure measurement system depends on every component in the connection chain. The swivel gauge adapter is among the most practically important yet frequently overlooked of these. Designed to provide full 360° rotational positioning of pressure gauges, transmitters, and other measuring instruments, Panam swivel gauge adapters ensure every instrument can be oriented for optimal readability without imposing stress on the process connection. Rated to 10,000 psi (689 bar) and manufactured in a comprehensive range of corrosion-resistant alloys, they are engineered for the most demanding industrial environments.
Coupling adaptors offer flexible movement, adjustment for pressure gauges
They heighten gauge comprehensibility and accessibility, vital for close measurements
Organized to defy hard-hitting environments, they maintain safety, integrity
By reducing strain on gauges, adaptors extend their operational life
A swivel gauge adapter is a three-component fitting — comprising an instrument connector, a swivel nut, and a process connector — that creates a rotatable interface between a fixed process connection and a pressure gauge. The instrument connector rotates freely through a full 360° arc relative to the process connector, allowing the gauge dial to be set to any viewing angle after the fitting has been tightened onto the process pipework.
The sealing mechanism maintains a completely leak-free connection throughout that rotational range at working pressures up to 6,000 psi (414 bar) standard, or 10,000 psi (689 bar) in the optional high-pressure variant. Panam adapters are also fully compatible with multi-port gauge valves and manifolds, enabling correct instrument positioning across complex hook-up arrangements without additional spool pieces.
Once the process connector is made up to the pipeline or instrument valve, the gauge can be rotated to any angle and locked in position by tightening the swivel nut. The dial remains fixed in the selected position regardless of subsequent vibration or thermal cycling.
Galling — the adhesive wear that occurs when stainless-steel threads seize under assembly load — is a persistent problem in high-pressure instrumentation fittings. Panam applies a silver plating to the swivel nut threads and bearing surface, acting as a solid-film lubricant that prevents micro-welding between contact surfaces. This enables trouble-free repeat assembly and disassembly, critical in applications requiring frequent gauge calibration or replacement.
Type M — Metal-to-Metal Seal: Sealing is achieved through precision-machined metal-to-metal contact with no O-ring. Rated to 538°C (1,000°F), this is the preferred choice for high-temperature service, steam, and fluids incompatible with polymer seals.
Type S — Soft Seal (PTFE or Graphoil O-ring): An O-ring provides a secondary sealing stage. Standard PTFE O-rings are rated to 260°C (500°F); Graphoil O-rings (HT suffix) extend this to 538°C (1,000°F). Preferred for toxic, hazardous, or fugitive-emissions-controlled service.
Four thread standards are supported to ensure global compatibility:
NPT: American National Pipe Taper per ASME B1.20.1.
BSPT / ISO Tapered: Per BS 21, ISO 7/1, EN 10226-1 — predominant in European and Middle Eastern installations.
BSPP / ISO Parallel: Per BS 2779, ISO 228-1 — for parallel-thread connections with face or O-ring seal.
Metric M20 × 1.5: Per ASME B1.13M, ISO 261 — common in European process plant applications.
Connection sizes are 1/2″ for NPT, BSPT, and BSPP, and M20 × 1.5 for metric threads, in both male and female inlet configurations.
Panam offers swivel gauge adapters in ten material grades to cover standard through severe-service environments:
SS 316 / SS 316L: ASTM A479-316 SS — standard for general process service; 316L preferred in heat-affected zones.
6Mo (S31254): ASTM A479 S31254 — superior pitting resistance in chloride-rich environments such as seawater and brine.
Duplex S32205 / Super Duplex S32750: ASTM A479 — high strength with excellent stress-corrosion cracking resistance for sour service.
Monel 400: ASTM B164 N04400 — for HF acid, seawater, and reducing acid environments.
Inconel 600 / Alloy 625 / Alloy 825: ASTM B166, B446, B425 — for elevated-temperature, wet CO₂, and seawater applications.
Hastelloy C-276: ASTM B574 N10276 — broadest corrosion resistance of any standard alloy; for mixed acid and chloride service.
All materials are verified by NABL-approved third-party laboratories and shipped with heat code traceability and EN 10204 Type 3.1B material test certificates.
A gauge installed without a swivel adapter is subject to bending moments at its stem whenever the body is forced into a non-natural orientation. These bending loads concentrate stress at the thread root — where wall thickness is minimal — causing fatigue cracking and eventual fugitive emissions. Swivel adapters eliminate this by allowing the gauge to self-align without any bending force being transmitted to the process thread.
In liquid-filled gauge applications, the orientation of the sensing element relative to gravity affects the zero offset. A gauge that cannot be precisely levelled may carry a systematic measurement error proportional to the weight of the fill fluid. Swivel adapters allow the gauge to be set to the correct orientation during commissioning, preserving factory calibration in the installed condition.
The 100% factory pressure-test protocol applied to every Panam adapter, combined with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance for sour-service variants, ensures the adapter does not become a weak point in the pressure boundary of safety-critical measurement loops.
Silver-plated threads prevent galling-related fitting damage — a common cause of unplanned instrument removal. Adapters that can be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without degradation of the sealing surface reduce the total cost of ownership across a plant's operating lifetime.
The three-part assembly (instrument connector, swivel nut, process connector — all ASTM A479-316 SS as standard) achieves a leak-free seal at up to 10,000 psi (689 bar) through contact geometry and surface finish alone. No elastomeric or polymer O-ring is used, making Type M the correct choice for temperatures up to 538°C (1,000°F) and for fluids incompatible with polymer materials.
Type S adapters incorporate an O-ring at the swivel interface as a secondary sealing stage. Standard PTFE O-rings cover service to 260°C (500°F); Graphoil O-rings (add 'HT' to part number) extend this to 538°C (1,000°F). Both types are available across all thread standards and all ten material grades.
To order the 10,000 psi rated variant, add '10K' to the part number (e.g., PSGA-8N-SS-10K). For NACE-compliant material, add 'SG' (e.g., PSGA-8N-SS-10K-SG). For Graphoil high-temperature seals, add 'HT' (e.g., PSGA-8N-SS-S-HT).

Swivel gauge adapters are precision-engineered components that directly affect the accuracy, integrity, and service life of every pressure gauge they support. By enabling full 360° instrument positioning without transmitting bending stress to the process connection, they preserve gauge calibration, prevent fatigue failures, and simplify field maintenance. The Panam swivel gauge adapter range — rated to 10,000 psi (689 bar), available in ten alloys, and offered in both metal-to-metal and soft-seal configurations — provides a comprehensive solution for instrumentation engineers across oil and gas, chemical, power generation, and process industries. Every unit is 100% pressure-tested and fully traceable.
A standard gauge fitting locks the gauge orientation at the point of thread make-up. A swivel adapter decouples instrument orientation from the process connection torque, allowing the gauge to be rotated through 360° and set to any viewing angle after the process thread has been fully tightened.
Type M uses metal-to-metal contact geometry only — no O-ring — and is rated to 538°C (1,000°F). Type S adds a PTFE O-ring (260°C / 500°F standard) or Graphoil O-ring (538°C / 1,000°F, HT suffix) for enhanced leak tightness in hazardous or emissions-controlled service.
The standard pressure rating is 6,000 psi (414 bar). The 10,000 psi (689 bar) optional rating is available by adding '10K' to the part number. All units are 100% factory pressure-tested prior to dispatch.
Add 'SG' to the part number for NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-compliant material. Suitable grades include SS 316, Duplex S32205, Super Duplex S32750, or Hastelloy C-276 depending on H₂S partial pressure, chloride content, and temperature.
Stainless-steel threads are prone to galling — a micro-welding mechanism under assembly load that can seize the fitting. Silver plating on the swivel nut threads and bearing surface acts as a solid-film lubricant, preventing galling and allowing repeated assembly and disassembly without damage to the sealing surfaces.
Yes. Panam adapters are fully compatible with multi-port gauge valves and 2-, 3-, and 5-valve manifolds, allowing each instrument to be independently oriented after all process connections have been made.
